about

Have you ever found yourself chasing after someone you've just pushed away after a really big fight? If one song encapsulates the fear and risk of losing someone you toxically love this would be it. Potholes is set in a dark urban street, riding bikes at dangerous speeds, in traffic, on bitumen that would rip you to shreds if you fell. This is what Freud listens to when he goes to sleep.

Recorded by John Lee at Phaedra
Mixed by Robin Waters at Glamour Trowel
Mastered by David Walker at Stepford Audio
Photography by Phoebe Powell
Design by Matthew Revert
All songs written and produced by Julie Montan and Soft Rubbish
Extra production by Robin Waters

lyrics

There's a face in my face
Potholes on the road
Big ones and small ones and people inside them
People are running away
Woah where are the running?
Why are they hiding?
I don't want to know

I went for a ride on my bike
I don't want to know
Through lanes of traffic
Boomgates Noughts and Crosses
Games that never end until somebody dies

Round and around and around and around and
Swings and roundabouts
It wasn't supposed to go round and around and
Swings and roundabouts

I ride like sonic boom
Frisky wheels stick the tar loom
Speed will get me there soon
And the traffic lights flash before my eyes
And you kept going where you were going
Where were you running
Why was I hiding?
Why Why?
Do we both run away
Why why
When we're having so much fun
Why are we
Running away
When everywhere that I go I go you go you go you go

There's a face in my face
Potholes on the road
Big ones and small ones and people inside them
People are running away
Woah where are they hiding?
I don't want to know
